Peace Day - Together

Civil Rights Movement

What does "Civil Rights" mean?

Marchers in Memphis in 1968

Rosa Parks - Civil rights Pioneer

Martin Luther King - Leader of the American civil rights movement

"Martin grew up in Atlanta when there were "White Only" signs on water fountains, restaurants, restrooms, and more. Unfair laws separated blacks from whites.

In 1955, an African American woman named Rosa Parks refused to gave up her bus seat to a white man. King asked other African Americans to stop riding buses. The boycott worked. Then King led more protests and marches. The biggest was the March on Washinghton in1963. More than 200,000 people were there to hear "I Have a Dream" speech. King said he wanted us to take care about who people are on the inside, not the outside.

In 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize. The "White Only" signs came down. The unfair laws were changed. King was killed in 1968."

Famous American of the Month by Pamela Chanco

Today, African-Americans have been elected or appointed to the highest positions in the U.S. government including Secretary of State (Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice ) and President (Barack Obama).

Welcome Second Term!

Full spread: “Dear Auntie Lupita … Snow came down all night and made my whole world new! This morning everything was white. I ran outside and made a snow angel. Do you remember the one we saw in the book at the library last year?
Mother says it is a funny time of year for snow, and it will all melt by tomorrow.
Where will the snow angel go? …”

Si seguís estas instrucciones podréis hacerlos también vosotros desde donde estéis y con una buena dosis de imaginación transportaros a un paisaje nevado desde el calor de vuestro hogar...

The Three Wise Men - Following the star

The Three Kings in the Spanish Epiphany are:
  • Gaspar, who has brown hair and a brown beard (or no beard!) and wears a green cloak and a gold crown with green jewels on it. He is the King of Sheba. Gaspar represents the Frankincense brought to Jesus. Frankincense is sometimes used in worship in Churches and showed that people worship Jesus.
  • Melchior, who has long white hair and a white beard and wears a gold cloak. He is the King of Arabia. Melchior represents the Gold brought to Jesus. Gold is associated with Kings and Christians believe that Jesus is the King of Kings.
  • Balthazar, who has black skin and a black beard (or no beard!) and wears a purple cloak. He is the King of Tarse and Egypt. Balthazar represents the gift of Myrrh that was brought to Jesus. Myrrh is a perfume that is put on dead bodies to make them smell nice and showed that Jesus would suffer and die.
Christmas in Spain

Epiphany is a public holiday in countries such as Austria, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland, Ethiopia (but on different date that varies annually), parts of Germany, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, Spain, and Uruguay.

It is not a public holiday in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States (except the US Virgin Islands where it is a public holiday).

Epiphany

Jo Parry

There is a festival that is celebrated in Spain that is about the Christmas Story. It is called Epiphany and is celebrated on 6th January. This is the twelfth night after Christmas.
In Spanish, Epiphany is called 'Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Magos': in English this means 'The festival of the three Magic Kings'. Epiphany celebrates when the Kings or Wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus.
Ellen Raskin

6th January – This is the Feast of the Epiphany (Día de los Reyes Magos) when the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem. For Spanish children this is the most important day of the year when they wake up to find that Los Reyes Magos (the Three Kings/Wise Men) have left gifts for them in their house.

Roser Calafell

Santa may leave them a token gift on December 25th but the Three Kings are their favourites, especially Baltasar who rides a donkey and is the one believed to leave the gifts. During the day of 6th the Three Kings continue their good work and are seen distributing gifts to children in hospitals all over Spain.

Subi -Joan Subirana-

Children have some presents on Christmas Day, but most are opened at Epiphany. Some children believe that the Kings bring presents to them at Epiphany.
They write letters to the Kings asking for toys and presents and on Epiphany Eve (January 5th) they leave shoes on windowsills or balconies or under the Christmas Tree to be filled with presents.
Gifts are often left by children for the Kings, a glass of Cognac for each King, a satsuma and some walnuts. Sometimes a bucket of water is left for the camels that bring the Kings.
If the children have been bad, the Kings might leave pieces of coal made out of sugar in the presents!

Natascia Ugliano

The special food that is eaten on the Epiphany is called Roscón de Reyes, meaning “twisted roll of kings”. It’s a loaf in the shape of a crown with fruit and nuts on top and filled with chocolate or whipped cream. There’s supposed to be a gold coin inside it. It’s said that the person who finds the coin will have good luck throughout the upcoming year.

Traditions

England

England celebrates the New Year from the evening of December 31st into January 1st. Traditionally it is not as widely celebrated as Christmas, but the year 2000 saw a large change. For instance people did not used to celebrate New Year with fireworks (they were reserved for Bonfire Night), but last year and this all across England people were setting off fireworks on the stroke of midnight.
More traditionally, on the stroke of midnight, people open the back door (to let the old year out) and ask the first dark haired man to be seen to come through the front door carrying salt, coal and bread. This means that the following year everyone in the house will have enough to eat (bread), enough money (salt) and be warm enough (coal).

Scotland

In Scotland they always seem to celebrate New Year better than anywhere else. The celebration of New Year's Eve is called "Hogmanay". The word Hogmanay comes from a kind of oat cake that was traditionally given to children on New Year's Eve.
In Edinburgh the celebrations always include a massive party from Prince's Street to the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. Unfortunately due to overcrowding in the past the event is now ticket only.
On New Year's Day (actually from the stroke of midnight) the tradition of first footing is observed. This is because the first person to set foot in a residence in a New Year is thought to profoundly affect the fortunes of everyone who lives there. Generally strangers are thought to bring good luck.
The version of Auld Lang Syne that was re-written by Robbie Byrnes, Scotland's National poet, is beloved in Scotland where it is sung on New Year's Eve while people cross hands at midnight.

We all sing Auld Lang Syne at midnight on December 31st but most people don't know that it is a Scottish poem written in 1788 by Robert Burns and later set to the music of a folk song. I've put in the English translation.

It's about connection with others. The kind that binds you to someone forever: loyalty, friendship, kindness, love. Even though that person might not be with you anymore. It's about the human spirit's ability to hope for the future while enduring rough times by remembering these precious human attributes.

Wales

New Year's Eve is called "Nos Galan" in Welsh, and  they also believe in letting out the old year and letting in the new if the first visitor in the New Year is a woman and a man opens the door it's considered bad luck. In addition, if the first man to cross the threshold in the New Year is a red head, that is also bad luck.
People in Wales also believe that you should pay off all debts before the New Year begins. Tradition states that ending a year in debt means a whole new year of debt.
On New Year's Day "Dydd Calan" in Wales the children get up early to visit their neighbors and sing songs. They are given coins, mince pies, apples and other sweets for singing. This stops at midday.
it can also depend on where you live as to when you celebrate New Year in Wales.  Some areas still celebrate Dydd Calan on January 12th.
