On 8th February 2016 we welcome in a new Chinese New Year, the Year of the Monkey!
"This Monkey year, I give you five monkeys:
the ingenuity of the macaque,
the health and happiness of the monkey,
the leisure and wealth of monkey-kind,
the lightheartedness of apes and monkeys,
and intelligence and wit surpassing the Monkey King." A traditional greeting for the Year of the Monkey
The monkey is one of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
Chinese New Year is the most important of the Chinese holidays, and is a
time of feasting with the family, celebration, fireworks and
gift-giving. It is a 15-day holiday, beginning on the first day of a new
moon and ending with the full moon on the day of the Lantern Festival.

and variations on the activities you will find described below. About
1/5 of the world's population will be enjoying the festivies, and New
Year's Eve is the world's biggest annual migration, with over 200
million people making every effort to get home for a big celebratory
dinner with their extended families.

February 2nd marks the half-way point between winter and spring. It is also the day that Groundhog Day is celebrated across North America with the most important celebrations taking place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
According to legend, it is believed that groundhogs wake from hibernation on February 2nd.
If the groundhog comes out of its burrow and sees its shadow, there
will be six more weeks of winter. If it comes out and does not see its
shadow, this indicates that spring is just around the corner.
Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of
January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King
Jr., an influential American civil rights leader. He is most well-known
for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for
racial equality in the United States.
Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., born in Atlanta, Georgia,
in 1929, never backed down in his stand against racism. He dedicated
his life to achieving equality and justice for all Americans of all
colors. King believed that peaceful refusal to obey unjust law was the
best way to bring about social change.
In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. helped to organize the famous "March on
Washington". Over 250,000 people attended this march in an effort to
show the importance of civil rights legislation. Some of the issues the
march hoped to accomplish included an end to segregation in public
schools, protection from police abuse, and to get laws passed that would
prevent discrimination in employment.
It was at this march where Martin gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. This
speech has become one of the most famous speeches in history. The March
on Washington was a great success. The Civil Rights Act was passed a
year later in 1964.
