Civil Rights Movement

What does "Civil Rights" mean?

Marchers in Memphis in 1968

Rosa Parks - Civil rights Pioneer

Martin Luther King - Leader of the American civil rights movement

"Martin grew up in Atlanta when there were "White Only" signs on water fountains, restaurants, restrooms, and more. Unfair laws separated blacks from whites.

In 1955, an African American woman named Rosa Parks refused to gave up her bus seat to a white man. King asked other African Americans to stop riding buses. The boycott worked. Then King led more protests and marches. The biggest was the March on Washinghton in1963. More than 200,000 people were there to hear "I Have a Dream" speech. King said he wanted us to take care about who people are on the inside, not the outside.

In 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize. The "White Only" signs came down. The unfair laws were changed. King was killed in 1968."
